Virtual console
The Virtual Console is a special section on the Wii’s Shopping Channel that
allows users to purchase or download games. Some of the games available are
retro games that were available on older Nintendo consoles, but they were not
made as actual Wii software discs. Players can experience original game play as
it was when the game was first released. Classic retro gaming can be done from
the Virtual Console through an emulator, but is not yet powerful enough to
support any consoles past the Nintendo 64. The Wii is able to pull original
gamers back in with the classic game play of their youth. Wii Ware is a service
that is offered to players who have their Wii connected to the Internet. This
service allows players to download games that were specifically designed for the
Wii. A product of the Virtual Console, Wii Ware, allows users to download games
that were specifically designed for the Wii console. The game downloads that
will be able to be found on Wii Ware are from smaller studios that can produce
great entertaining games, but do not yet have the capital to be able to mass
publish the games to be sold in stores. There are a variety of puzzle games on
Wii Ware, some which resemble the Tetris game play. The games on both the
Virtual Console and Wii Ware are purchase with Wii Points. Wii points are
Nintendo’s version of online money. Players can buy Wii points online or buy a
point card at most retail chains. These points can also be used to purchase
upgrades to downloaded games. New games are usually released on a weekly basis
so there is a never ending supply of fun at your fingertips.
